Hunter Newns is the successor of two firms who have had their presence in Hamilton for over seventy years.
Hunter Newns' predecessor, Hunter Newns and Cornish was formed as a result of a merger between Cameron & Lowenstern and Hull Newns & Co. The former firm had been practising in Hamilton under the name of Cameron & Lowenstern for many years. That firm practised both in Hamilton and Casterton.
The firm Hull Newns & Co was a successor to Westacott & Lord which had operated in Hamilton since the 1920's. Westacott & Lord became Hull Newns & Ballantyne and then Hull Newns & Co. In the early 1970's it acquired the practice of Nicol Sylvester & Culhain in Portland.
Following the merger in 1984 the new firm Hunter Newns & Cornish practised in Hamilton, Casterton and Portland. Changes in partners occurred but the core partners of Robert Hunter, Brian Newns and Geoff Simpson continued.
In 2001, Mark Stratmann became a partner in the firm and in 2003 Brian Newns retired after a long career in the law in the Western District.
In 2007, Robert Hunter (who had moved into a consultancy role) retired after 50 years with the firm and Geoff Simpson moved into the role of consultant solicitor after retiring from the partnership.
John Fletcher and Mark Stratmann were in partnership from 2007 until 2010 and thereafter Mark became the sole principal of the firm.
Hunter Newns will be a provider of high quality legal services to the community which it serves and provide advice and representation in a timely and cost effective manner.
